6 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Bedroom

Your bedroom should be the place that you go to rest and recharge. But often it becomes simply a utilitarian room where you simply rest your head before you have to rush hectically into the coming day.

Changing your routine so that you are getting restful sleep and waking up ready to conquer the day often starts with changing the environment around you. Making your bedroom a soothing place that fills you up doesn’t have to take much time or money, but with a few simple tweaks and a couple of well-appointed purchases, you’ll find yourself falling in love with your bedroom.

Below are some simple tips to turn your bedroom into a serene, spa-like oasis:

1. Sleep Only on Bedding You Love

Your bed is the focus of the room and the majority of the time you spend there is in bed, so it is important that you love your bedding. Investing in a quality set of sheets and a luxurious comforter will go a long way towards you loving your bedroom. The bedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be of good quality and something that you’ll love sliding into at night, but it should be soft, comfortable and durable.

2. Cut the Clutter

You may be a little more lenient on yourself and your loved ones when it comes to other parts of the home, but eliminating clutter and keeping things clean, not letting shoes and clothes and magazines pile up is one major key to building a relaxing environment. You do not want anything in your sleep space to trigger stress or worry. Clearing your cutter helps to clear & calm your mind.

3. Add Calming Artwork

Serene artwork such as those of calming greens and blues or depicting soft lines or natural scenes such as foliage, water or landscapes can help to invite a calm into the space and your demeanor.

4. Dim Your Lighting

Consider switching out any bright bulbs for warmer ones, avoiding blue light and keeping your lighting dim and relaxing. Avoid overhead and harsh lighting and switch to a sconce or bedside lighting at night.

5. Aromatherapy & Sound Therapy

Using an aromatherapy diffuser and playing soft calming music before bed can help to invoke a spa-like feel that puts you at ease and winds you down for the night. If you visit a favorite spa, ask what music and scents they use to create such a calming atmosphere and then follow their lead. You don’t have to wait for the once-in-a-blue-moon spa day to treat yourself.

6. Eliminate Electronics & Make It a Work-Free Zone

You need one place where you are not harassed by work, social media, texts or email obligations. Say no to bringing your laptop or work papers into the bedroom and even consider removing the television. Create a no electronics rule and don’t use your smartphone or tablet in the bedroom. Sometimes it's important to relax and shut off for a while, and the most important place to do so is in the bedroom.

All of these tips are ones you can implement either overnight or over the weekend. Simple but powerful tweaks that can make you fall in love with your bedroom and your nightly ritual. Settling in for bed and rising in the morning can become a joy when you love the space you do it in.
